 iPad Pro M4

Is This the Ultimate ‘Patio-Commute’ Device?

The M4 Leap

Apple has done something unusual: they’ve debuted their most powerful chip, the M4, inside an iPad before a Mac. For the garden commuter, the iPad Pro M4 (13-inch) is a hardware marvel. At just 5.1mm thick, it is literally thinner than an iPod Nano, yet it has more processing power than most desktop PCs.

Tandem OLED: Beating the British Sun

The real star for outdoor working is the Ultra Retina XDR display. By layering two OLED panels (Tandem OLED), Apple has achieved 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness. In our testing on a rare sunny May morning, the “Nano-texture glass” option (available on 1TB+ models) virtually eliminated the reflection of the apple trees behind us. This is, hands down, the best screen ever put on a mobile device.

The Verdict

  • Highs: Best-in-class display; unbelievable power-to-weight ratio; landscape camera.
  • Lows: Extremely expensive (especially with the new Magic Keyboard); iPadOS still feels restrictive compared to macOS.
